Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track right in his path

The concerning event happened on the third rotation when marshals were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to replace his broken nose section

Competitor's Live Reaction

Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes sprinting across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a active circuit safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"

Official Investigation Underway

Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the events

"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the FIA

"On lap three, safety personnel were notified and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy personnel were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that zone"

"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
