A teenage boy was found dead just days following being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's parents found his body in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.

False Accusations Begin

The investigation heard how his parent received a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my flat."

In a testimony presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the news, asserting her infant's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Investigation

An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged burglary victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was never taken in the first place".

Media reports about the alleged taken remains generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "understood it was him".

The "online posts were extremely distressing", she stated.

Mental Health Impact

She explained that her son had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.

"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".

Kai was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.

Isolation and Anxiety

His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".

When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the house because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom anytime he wanted, but refuted taking anything.

Digital Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.

The inquest learned that one 19-year-old encouraged Kai to kill himself.

She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".

She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".

He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Response

The inquest heard from school staff at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "overheard some boys discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I heard".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.

After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's family landline and left a message saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.

The court heard his family said they did not receive that message.

Formal Conclusion

Senior investigator informed the inquest he would await reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Providing a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old child.

"Likely untruths were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.

"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."

The official concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any organization led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
