British government has added an additional eleven further nations to its travel alert list concerning the threats of methanol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
The expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol poisoning.
Just recently, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to multiple notable cases like the fatal demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.
Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, licensed producers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.
However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to detect.
Foreign Office minister a senior official said that each tourist should know the indicators of methanol toxicity.
"While drinking spirits overseas, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister warned.
"If something feels off, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – get medical help right away."
The entire list of destinations identified as presenting a danger of methanol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
